David, un exitoso terapeuta, es el autor de un método nunca antes visto en la psicología: Una máquina que le permite alterar los recuerdos más dolorosos de sus pacientes. Su esposa, Lucía, es víctima de una enfermedad extraña que la matará en poco tiempo. La solución parece llegar en la forma de Sofía; una paciente de David que le solicita usar su máquina para reescribir toda su vida. A David se le ocurre engañarla para en su lugar traspasarle los recuerdos de Lucía. Lucía se niega, pero el miedo a morir sumado a su obsesión por completar su autorretrato, al que considera su legado, la convencen de aceptar. David y Lucía (En el cuerpo de Sofía) consiguen llevar una vida normal tras borrarse el recuerdo de su crimen para vivir en una feliz ignorancia. Pero el borrar la memoria, no borra los actos y la farsa que han construido comienza a desmoronarse a medida que el ambiente en la casa se hace más extraño y Lucía vuelve a presentar síntomas de la enfermedad misteriosa. La única solución es ver en los recuerdos de Lucía la verdad que omitieron, lo que los lleva a descubrir que esos no son los únicos recuerdos que se han borrado y que hay un oscuro pasado que David ocultó hace años.
