Rosa von Praunheim retrata a Magnus Hirschfeld, pionero de la investigación sexual (1868-1935). Hirschfeld, judío liberal, fundó en 1897 el «Comité Científico-Humanitario» y apoyó una petición contra el artículo 175, que criminalizaba a los homosexuales. Trabaja para la Asociación Psicoanalítica, pero luego se enemista con Freud y Jung. Con su Instituto de Investigación Sexual, fundado en 1919, alcanza reconocimiento internacional; sin embargo, tras la llegada al poder de los nacionalsocialistas, el instituto es desmantelado y Hirschfeld muere en el exilio. Von Praunheim ilustra y comenta cronológicamente las etapas de su vida casi como en una película didáctica.
