Separados en vida por culpa de la violencia, Basilio y su madre Inés, comprenden que su reencuentro sólo se debe a que ahora están muertos. Pero al no hallar en aquel lugar señales del padre desaparecido, deciden partir en su búsqueda, emprendiendo un viaje físico y espiritual a través de un paisaje completamente devastado por la guerra: con pueblos destruidos, campos abandonados, ríos convertidos en cementerios e innumerables historias de desolación y muerte. Todo esto provocado por Basilio, quien en vida se convirtió en un criminal salvaje y que ahora se ve obligado a revivir una y otra vez todo el horror de aquellos actos cometidos; pero en esta ocasión, con su madre como testigo.
