Biopic del legendario Jim Morrison y su banda The Doors, desde sus inicios hasta la muerte del cantante en una habitación de hotel de París en 1971. En los primeros días de la formación del grupo, Morrison está en su momento más benigno; es sólo un tipo que pasa el rato en la playa escribiendo poesía. Pero pronto la fama de los Doors comienza a extenderse, con Morrison como centro de atención. A medida que el consumo de drogas y el comportamiento errático de Morrisson aumentan exponencialmente, el resto de la banda -Ray Manzarek (Kyle McLachalan), John Densmore (Kevin Dillon) y Robby Krieger (Frank Whaley)- empieza a cansarse de sus llegadas tardías, del creciente número de cancelaciones y de las sesiones de grabación ebrias que requieren infinitas repeticiones.
