En 1966, Colombia y el mundo se conmovieron ante un grupo de profesores que marchó en defensa de la educación. Isbelia y Consuelo formaron parte de 800 caminantes que se propusieron recorrer 1662 km a pie desde el Caribe Colombiano hasta Bogotá, y fueron dos de los 86 que lograron llegar. Esa fue conocida como La Marcha del hambre, uno de los mayores precedentes en la conquista de la educación pública.
